"It pays for itself" is the line every home-espresso convert repeats, but almost nobody does the actual math. The per-shot breakdown
Start with beans. A 340 g bag at an 18 g dose yields about 18–19 double shots (340 grams divided by 18 is about 18.9). At an assumed $16 a bag, that's roughly $0.85 of coffee per double. A few things stand out. Beans dominate— they're the vast majority of the per-shot cost, which is why bean choice matters more to your wallet than agonizing over electricity. Electricity is basically a rounding error: a machine draws a lot of watts, but only briefly, so a single drink costs about a penny to power. And maintenance is small but real— descaling solution and water filters spread out to a few cents a shot. Break-even versus buying it at a cafe

What actually moves the number
Before you treat that break-even as gospel, know which levers matter most.
